Yard Visitor

This visitor was a bit lethargic in the cool air this am. It has been damp!------- Mom's care conference was this am. She was only down less than 1 # in the past month. (@ 103.6) Hopefully leveling off with her weight loss. I go back out this afternoon too for a "Appreciation Tea" to honor Auxiliary Volunteers.

Robin Problem

We have had a robin problem for more than a week. There are a pair of robins determine on building a nest on top of our garage door opener. They wait until they see the door open and have been inside as we get the car backed out. That is how I noticed her first. There were sticks and etc. on top of the opener and it was the first time the door had been open that day. Pop has blown off the nesting materials numerous times. We keep the door shut most of the time. They poke around the yard awaiting their chance to get in. I would think they would soon be needing their nest and would have another spot picked. I don't know how to suggest a different nesting site!_________________________________ Update---Pop put a plastic owl up beside the nesting area. Didn't scare Mrs. Robin one bit! She was up beside/ under the owl before it even cooled off from Pop's hands!!! Now going to try oil and screen.

Busy Day

First this morning was our usual Thursday Faith Sharing group. Then at noon some of us attended the CDA luncheon and card party in Churdan. This evening I went over to Carroll for the HS boys track meet. Jeff was in 2 events. ( and we left earlier than the meets Monday and Tuesday when he anchored the last relay) That was 3 track meets in 4 days. His times were good, but not as good as Tues. They were against the wind at the finish line. Stiff competition with Boone, Harlan, Carroll, Kuemper and Denison there. He was 4th in the 100. Two of the boys in the picture beat him and one from the first heat. This was his second time to run the 100. The relay got 4th too, I think. I don't think the coaches have quite decided where they need him most. Fri.---Vicki said this a.m. that he ran in the 4x400 too last night. One of the boys scheduled was having problems with muscle cramps (It had gotten colder) Said he had good time, but she felt he was wearing down by the end of that race.

More Track

I have an abundance of track pictures. I emailed some to those of whom I have addresses and put some more on facebook. Last evening I figured out: I was at the track meet close to 4 hours. Jeff ran in 3 events and the total of his time was about 1 minute, 30 seconds. I filled my time with my camera!!! I love watching all the kids and they work so hard trying to improve. It is a challenge to catch runners at the height of jumping hurdles and high jump. Here is Jeff starting the 4x400 and Hannah S. winning the 100 hurdles. I need to take my flash drive down and put pictures on the computer for Dave to see. He has been working and missing watching his favorite sport.

Last Night Track Meet

Tonight's track meet was cold. Last night's was colder! But I have warm clothes. Hil jumped 4'8", I don't know if she placed. (There were lots of larger schools.) Jeff ran a 4x800 and a 200 in the medley relay. He ran again tonight in a East Greene Varsity Meet with A schools and our JV team. They keep trying him to get times on different events. He ran a 100 (3rd), 200 (2nd) & 4x400 relay (1st). He had missed a couple varsity meets, so could run with the JV for another meet. East Greene used our track, so that was handy for us to take part. Our younger boys did well against the varsity boys from other schools. (Jeff is in the black) These pictures are from last night. I haven't gotten tonight's out of the camera yet.

Prom Tonight

Tonight is prom night. Teresa was in charge of the Grand March. First it was scheduled for outside. Than rain was predicted and developing. It was changed to inside, at the Rec Center. Pop was going to take up the streetrod to fit in with the theme of 'Rock the Town'. Than rain looked like it was going to hold off and it was changed back to outdoor. A switch was made to a different guy's car, without the open top, incase it did rain. The rain held off, though it got plenty dark for pictures. First there was a banquet. Now they are at the Elks for the dance with an after prom party until about 3 a.m. at the Middle School gym. Lots of very pretty dresses. I like the prints that are popular this year. The guys look nice too with their coordinated ties and etc.

Shower for Baby Brown

Courtney hosted a baby shower for Jenni. We had a nice brunch and a great group attending. Now Baby Brown has many nice things to welcome him to the world. (I say "him" until I know different. However, I am predicting a girl.)

Soccer

Calvin had soccer last night after Baseball practice. He needed transportation. All drivers in his family were busy. Tonight he is hanging out here. All big kids and parents are busy again. Tough to be the littlest. We enjoy his company. He is plenty independent and no trouble. I enjoy going to activities. But I opted out of the track meet in Creston tonight. That is one of the great things about being Grandma. You can pick and chose! (We are going garage saleing pretty soon.)

Tree Trimming

Our maple tree was crowded on the west side by the ash tree. In order for it to grow to the west and become a more well rounded tree, we had them take two branches off the east side of the ash. Ash disease has been seen in Dubuque, so has crossed the Mississippi. We will be fortunate to have any ash trees in a few years. We have two ash trees in the parking in the front of the house and one in the backyard.

Size 6

Yesterday before the track meet in Carroll I made a Wal-Mart stop. One of the things I was looking for were underpants for Grandma Phoebe. Her old ones had had it (She thought I should stitch them up!) and besides they were much too large since her weight loss. She, of course, wanted the kind she had worn the past 80 years. Or maybe before that, truth be known. Anyway white were impossible to find in her smaller size and most were bikini and thong this time of year. I did find some colored and printed ones ( little flowers I thought she would like) that had a little more length to them. I took them up this morning before her bath and gave them to her and the nurse aides. I told her I couldn't get white. She was her usual morning crabby and said, "I don't care what you got!" This afternoon I talked to the aides and they had fit fine. She had put on the lime green pair and modeled them for them! So guess that is the size for now. I brought home another outfit to sew up the side seams to try to make smaller, so she can keep her pants up. Maybe it will be helpful that she can't remember what she likes! One advantage of forgetfulness!

Girls Track @ Carroll

First picture was at 4'4". You can see the height on the other pictures. Hil jumped 4'8" with space to clear and passed on 4'10". By my calculations she probably tied for 4th. There were 8 girls teams and 8 boys teams, but not our JS boys. They were in Gowrie. So Teresa watched Jeff there.______________I found out later Hil got 3rd place!! Congrats, Hil!

Easter Dinner @ Dan & Nancy's

We were invited out for Easter dinner in Williamsburg with Dan and Nancy and other family members. We had a great lunch and enjoyed the people and the day. Dan had cooked pork loin and a turkey on their Holland grill. Everyone brought something to contribute to the meal. Nancy had it all coordinated and filled in potatoes, gravy, drinks and etc. The Sherman Easter egg hunt tradition was carried out. One little hunter had lots of help and plenty of candy for all.

Happy Easter!

Easter Bouquet

Today in Long Term about 11:25 a.m.----------------- Marge, your flowers arrived. Look very nice. They needed a little water this am and will perk up more after the drink I gave them. When ask when she got them - "I've had them awhile." She was proud of the bunny.

Centennial of St. Joseph's Church

Our church will be celebrating our centennial in September. Preparations have started. Last Saturday after Mass the first program recognized the descendants of the original members. That was fun, especially for us genealogists. The program next month will be memorabilia. The charter for the Knights of Columbus used to hang in the parish center. It disappeared and no one seem to know anything about where it may have gone. Pop went searching today. It was found in a storage room in the rectory, along with a lot of things that no one knew about. Priests change every so many years and the store room must have been a catch all for many things not needed. __The printing is so fancy it is hard to read. But there are three "Fields" listed. J.E., J.W. and C.J. It was in 1919. The J.W. would have been my Grandpa. J.E. = Uncle Jim (He would have been 18 then) and C.J. = Dad's Uncle Charles. I'm anxious to see what else is found.

Track @ Panora

Hil and Jeff___________________________________ A bit cold and windy. Jeff was back in action, but not supposed to go full force. He ran the last leg of the B, 4 x 800. And he didn't turn on the steam until the last 1/2 lap, than passed a guy that he started about 1/4 lap behind. Hil jumped and than was to run in the 200 relay, but I didn't stay around for her race. She hasn't ran since middle school! I'm anxious to see how that went.

More Snow

Good old Iowa weather!!! Yesterday afternoon the wind picked up preceding the predicted snow. The pole between us and Nora, with the transformer on it, tipped and fell into our tree. So we called the appropriate people and it was propped up to get us going again by the time I got back home from Relay for Life, Church, and a program after. ( on descendants of the original members of St. Joseph's) Pop did get to the races but it was called early due to rain._______The snow picture was taken this a.m. And it is still snowing. The band of snow on the radar doesn't look too wide, but the weather people say it isn't moving. The Jim Gingery services for tonight and Monday have all been postponed one day. That will help the travelers immensely.

On the Edge

We're on the edge - - of a storm warning. It's colder and windy. _____ This little finch is just starting to get his summer coloring. _____ ' Frostbuster', the first stockcar races of the year is tonight in Boone. Pop wants to go, but doesn't want to freeze. He has plenty of warm clothes, but is waiting to see how the weather is later. _____ Relay for Life is tonight. I plan to be there for the survivors victory lap. What else will depend on Pop's schedule, .

Worked Auxiliary Gift Shop Today

Grandma Phoebe's hands. ------------------------------- We had a busy day today. We sold over $200 worth today! (Employees are our best costumers.) I got machines filled, so that is done for a few days. Grandma Phoebe loves getting her nails done by the Auxiliary Ladies. She has pretty nails. (I inherited Grandpa's wide nails) I don't do fingernails in long term. Too many times I had to take off colored nail polish to check circulation to ever agree to put it on!!! The clear is fine.
